The essential safety handbook for nut splitters

Every Mechanic and Engineer has encountered nuts that won’t come undone. Whether it is due to rust, heat or extreme vibration, the nut seems to be fixed in place. Before seeking a saw or a torch to try to cut off the seized nut, use a hydraulic nut splitter; a safe solution that will prevent further damage being caused.

The HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter is an essential, handy tool to be included in any toolkit. With an easy to use design and a variety of sizes to choose from, it ensures you can complete difficult jobs safely and quickly.

With a triple edged disposable cutting blade and a uniquely angled head design, you can easily tackle any seized or corroded nuts and more often than not, the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter’s blade position ensures the bolt can be reused once it is free.

The HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter facilitates cutting through the largest nuts with virtually no risk of injury or accidents by eradicating the need for unsafe grinding and flame cutting.

Safe Operation Guide

The HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter is simple and easy to use. Simply place the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter head over the nut and apply the required hydraulic pressure. One cut will free even the most corroded nut, however the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter blade can be rotated to make two cuts, 180 degrees apart to cleanly cut the nut away from the bolt, leaving the bolt tread intact and ready for reuse.

Please note, always ensure the operator wears the correct personal protective clothing and equipment i.e. gloves, safety glasses.

To avoid damage to the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter blade, housing, plunger and seals:

  • Do not cut chains or bolts
  • Do not use the nut splitter to rotate nuts
  • Do not move the nut splitter during the cutting operation
  • Do not heat up nuts whilst the nut splitter is in position

Please ensure that all system components are protected from external sources of damage, such as excessive heat, flame, moving machine parts, sharp edges, and corrosive chemicals.

To prevent injury, do not place fingers on or near the cutting blade while the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter is in operation, and to avoid damage, do not use the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter on materials which could shatter e.g. glass, plastic, wood etc.

Operating procedure

  • Make all appropriate hydraulic connections
  • Place the HTL Nut Splitter head over the nut Important: the flat surface of the cutter must rest flat on one of the nut flats, and the head must also rest on a flat surface.
  • Hold the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter in the proper position
  • Operate the pump until the cutter blade cuts through the nut
  • To avoid damage to the bolt thread, de-energize the pump as soon as the nut is split
  • Retract the blade
  • Repeat the cutting process on the other side of the nut (Must be 180 degrees opposed)
  • Retract the cutter blade and remove both nut halves

Eliminate unsafe grinding with HTL

Using the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter you can easily remove seized and corroded nuts whilst eradicating the need for unsafe grinding and flame cutting. The HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitters are designed with a single acting spring return cylinder and a heavy duty, triple edge disposable cutting blade which can easily be removed, making re-grinding and replacement possible.

These beneficial features make the HTL Hydraulic Nut Splitter applicable to a range of industries, such as mining, construction, steel work, service trucks, petrochemical and the piping industry to name a few.
