The Basic Safety Principles

How to Use a Hydraulic Torque Wrench

A torque wrench is simply a power tool that achieves a controlled tightening or loosening of a bolted connection, with the use of a hydraulic pump.

There are varying sizes and models available, such as direct fit with a cassette type torque wrench, or by using a socket and a square drive torque wrench. Whatever option you choose, there are some basic safety steps that you’ll need to follow.

Safety

  • Always wear appropriate PPE when using a hydraulic torque wrench. This includes safety gear such as safety goggles and gloves. Jewellery should always be removed before using a torque wrench as well.
  • Carry out a system function test by pressurising the system before applying the wrench. This will help identify any problems, detect any leaks etc.
  • If a handle is provided, always grip the wrench here and not by the hoses or other connections, keeping hands away from the reaction member at all times.
  • Never use sockets that show signs of damage, are of the incorrect size. Ensure sockets are of impact type when using hydraulic wrenches.
  • Keep a good distance from the torque wrench when in use to protect yourself in case a fault occurs.
  • Always check that the tool is within its calibration date and has been serviced.
  • If you are not sure on how to use the wrench, Seek advice before using the tooling.

These do not overwrite any technical training courses and all users of mechanical equipment should undergo technical training before handling powered equipment. Always follow the Operating Instruction before use.
